By Helen Simonson
Lexile = ?
I guess that I can call a book a stinker if I was just unable to finish it....?
The Summer Before the War is by the same author as Major Pettigrew's Last Stand, which I loved and you can read all about HERE. Simonson's talent is for characterization, but I didn't see it here in The Summer Before the War.
But I SHOULD like this novel. It is set in England in 1914 and features a new feisty, Latin teacher sent to the small village school. There is a hint of romance and LOTS of English countryside, but it all left me waiting for something to happen. Finally I gave up. Filing this under "not for me". The USA Today review of this title reads in part, "There are many pages to go and florid descriptions to wade through first. Everything in Summer is a bit muted and proper; it simmers for a long time."
I just wasn't willing to wait that long for something to happen. Sorry.
