You know you have joined the right book club when they pick a book you would not have found on your own and you LOVE it! Indigo Girl is the TRUE story of Eliza Lucas, who took over her father's plantation in his absence and created an empire.
From the book flap: Based on historical documents, including Eliza's letters, this is a historical fiction account of how a teenage girl produced indigo dye, which became one of the largest exports out of South Carolina, an export that laid the foundation for the incredible wealth of several Southern families who still live on today. Although largely overlooked by historians, the accomplishments of Eliza Lucas influenced the course of US history. When she passed away in 1793, President George Washington served as a pallbearer at her funeral.
She was just sixteen when her father left the plantation in her care. Sixteen. Makes me feel a bit inept. I know what my sixteenth year was like and it wasn't running an enterprise of any sort. Wow.
