Lexile = ?
I have a thing for British village novels... blame Downton Abbey for that one. Knowing that, Major Pettigrew is not a novel intended for young adults, but not because it is inappropriate, it just may not be interesting to a typical high school student. Here's the plot:
Major Ernest Pettigrew is a retired widower living a typical proper English countryside life. When his brother dies, he attends the funeral and hopes to retrieve a gun that was left to the brothers by they father many years ago. But this is really a star-crossed love story.... Major Pettigrew meets Mrs. Jasmina Ali, a Pakistani shopkeeper from the village. Pettigrew is a creature of tradition, and tradition dictates that they should not end up together.
I loved loved loved all these characters! Found myself cheering for the hero, booing the bad guys and hoping for a happy ending for these two. (But I can't tell you if that happens.)
