The River

By Peter Heller
Lexile = 1000(?)

Two best friends decide to have a great last adventure in the wilderness before their real adult lives begin. They are experienced outdoorsmen. The idea is to paddle down the river, camp along the way, and enjoy a leisurely summer adventure. Well.... there is a forest fire. And after hearing other campers arguing very loudly, a mysterious man appears covered in blood saying that his wife has "disappeared". Hmmmm....

The writing in The River is beautiful - nature writing at its best. And unexpected! A murder mystery that feels so literary as you are pulled along in a "what ELSE could possibly go wrong" kind of way. I really love this book.
