Buxbaum is one of my favorite YA authors. I loved Tell Me Three Things and What to Say Next. Hope and Other Punch Lines centers on Meme culture, specifically what if part of your real life is continually showing up as a meme in social media feeds and strangers burst into tears once they find out who you are? Abbi Goldstein is better known as "Baby Hope" ... a teenager who has lived as a memory of the 9/11. Abbi was photographed as she was carried away from the crumbling towers on her first birthday. Abbi wants to be anonymous; she accepts a job at a summer camp where she hopes no one will connect 16-year-old Abbi to one-year-old Baby Hope.
Of course that is impossible, because this is YA fiction. Other kids at the camp have their own issues and plans, including Noah, who is familiar with the Baby Hope photo for personal, tragic reasons.
This all reminds me of a TRUE story about the "blinking white guy". He became a meme of incredulity. He recently decided to take ownership of the joke. Read more about that HERE.
