True Story! Pino Lella led an adventurous life. At age seventeen, he began guiding refugees in Italy over the Alps to escape the coming Nazi invasion. Pino is on the right in the picture above. When his parents discovered his clandestine activities, they enlisted him in the Italian Army to "protect" him. Pino had learned to drive as a very young man, and when the Army found out about this skill, they selected him to be the personal driver for one of the Nazi commanders in Italy. Pino becomes a spy for the Italian Underground, but he can't tell his friends and they think he is a traitor.
The author (left) with Pino Lella.
I love a good World War II story, and Beneath a Scarlet Sky is focused on Mussolini's grip on the Italian front of the war. This is a perspective that I am not as familiar with.
There is talk of a movie adaptation of Scarlet Sky, but I haven't seen details. Watch a short video of how the book came to be HERE.
