By Michelle Obama
Lexile = 1170
This memoir has three sections: Becoming Me, Becoming Us, & Becoming More. What a great delineation of the life of Michelle Obama! Although the world at large didn't know her or her story before she became first lady, she was so much on her own and should not be seen as merely a side car to Barack Obama.
The south side of Chicago can be a rough place to grow up, but nutured by a loving family and a strong community at large, Michelle writes fondly of her youth. For high school, she was accepted to an exclusive school on the other side of town, but even teachers at that school discouraged her from "aiming too high". She did aim high and attended Princeton University. Even when she became a "big-shot" lawyer and could have left the neighborhood, she chose to continute living in the family home.
She met the future President when he was hired as an intern at the law firm where she was working and Michelle was assigned to mentor him. Yup! He reported to HER.
This memoir is really a story of a strong, stable family surrounded by the chaos of life and the WORLD. The Obamas have been and continue to be a great example of the American family.
