OK, this book is about hip hop, so I am already out of my depth. Bri, our main character, wants to become a hip hop artist like her father. She is involved in the "underground" hip hop scene which involves Rap-offs as a form of competition to see who is the greatest rapper. Now I can admit that I didn't finish this book.
LOVED The Hate U Give by Thomas. I guess that I have read enough about the subject of driving while black to understand what the author is showing there. And I was looking forward to this as a followup. Thomas is a rapper herself, so I know that On the Come Up is a labor of love. Just didn't resonate with me. I do think that students will enjoy the novel. I labeled it as Edgy.... rap lyrics are edgy, you know. Like THUG, On the Come Up is being developed into a movie.
