Another Holocaust book? Yes, that is what I thought. I love historical fiction and I particularly have enjoyed a LOT of World War II fiction. I feel like I have read it all, so I was opting to kip this one. But. The author was introduced to Lale Sokolov in 2003. He hadn't told anyone ALL of his story. This is considered "fiction" but it is based on the true story of how Lale met his wife originally in a concentration camp and vowed to survive in order to marry her. He said, "I tattooed her number on her left hand, and she tattooed her number in my heart."
So we know that there is a happy ending here... but getting to that point is harrowing and heart-breaking. Lale's story made me think about what I would be willing to do to protect those I love: steal? lie? kill?
You MUST watch the a brief interview with Lale done in 2004 HERE. Get the tissues ready.
