I will indicate on each post the Lexile level of the book.

The Girl Who Smiled Beads

By Clemantine Wamariya
Lexile = ?

Becasue this true story is told in flashbacks, we know it has a happy ending... and that is good because it has a very tragic beginning. Clemntine (age 6) and Claire (age 15) flee their Rwandan village as war thunders closer and closer to home. They travel from danger zone to refugee camp again and again, always farther from their home, and never knowing what happened to their parents.

Eventually Clemetine is evacuated to America and helped out by a refugee organization and a terrific family. I found the American parts so interesting because her acclimation to saftey and security is not without its problems. Meanwhile, her sister has married a refugee worker and that isn't easy either.

Here's the fun part (but it is part of the American acclimation trouble)... she was reunited on the Oprah show with.... well, I'll let you watch it HERE. Crying......

Clementine also gave a short TED talk much later. Watch it HERE.

Now come get the book!
