Please browse here to find books that I think are worth your time.... or are real stinkers. I will let you know what I REALLY think of what I am reading. You might not find the newest and most popular books here, but I would LOVE it if you find something unexpectedly great!

I will indicate on each post the Lexile level of the book.

Nyxia and Nyxia Unleashed

By Scott Reintgen
Lexile = 650

This is series that fills a lot of needs for a school librarian. "What's a good book for boys?" "What's a good book for someone who doesn't like to read?" "What's a really good science fiction novel?"And yet the thing thing I liked best about this series is the believeable, futuristic science and the likeable "aliens" that didn't seem so alien.

Nyxia is a substance, a "thing" that is being mined out of a far distant planet named Eden. The current residents of the this planet don't trust adults, so the Babel corporation recruits teenagers to travel to the planet and conduct mining operations on the planet. Can you guess how this is going to turn out? No, you can't and that is what makes this such a fun read! There is even a bit of romance dropped in as well.

The author is (was?) a high school teacher in North Carolina, and I recently stumbled on the following about his main protagonist from an interview with the author:

Emmett is a lot like some of my students. He’s incredibly intelligent and driven, but life hasn’t often given him an opportunity to shine. Aboard the Genesis 11, he’s getting his chance. Not only to make a name for himself, but to change the outlook of his life forever. I loved seeing Emmett struggle toward greatness while still maintaining the goodness his parents taught him.

I'm betting there WILL be a movie of this. Stay tuned!
