I loved the first book in this trilogy, Scythe. And I liked Thunderhead, the sequel, even more. So.... why didn't I like The Toll? One fan described the book this way: it's as if "the reader is watching a puzzle being completed, with each piece slowing finding its home until the final result is realized." I agree, but it was just too slow. Characters that I had completely forgotten about and didn't think were integral to the plot, pop in and out of the initial chapters of the conclusion.
Shusterman had to tie it all up; I get that. But it was a bit long and rambling. Worth the read, in fact, I should probably read the whole trilogy again so it doesn't seem so dis-jointed. (But I am NOT a re-reader.... rarely happens in my life!)
If you liked Scythe and Thunderhead, you should read this. Watch a short explanation from the author HERE.
