By Ruth Sepetys
Lexile = 620
Sepetys has written Between Shades of Gray and Salt to the Sea, among others. Fountains of Silence is her best so far. Perhaps this is true because she has chosen an era of history that is less-known and certainly less written about.
Francisco Franco ruled Spain as a dictator from 1939 until his death in 1975. 36 years! He came to power with the help of the Nazis and had absolute control over all aspects of the country until his death. Sepetys' novel is set in the late 50's as Spain was attempting to attract outside investment and tourism from America.
Daniel Matheson, son of an oil tycoon, arrives in Madrid and in his free time, hopes to photograph the area. He meets Ana, and discovers the dark side of the Spanish Republic. This book has bull-fights, romance, and a mystery! I learned so much from this read. Would make a great movie, but for now enjoy a quick explanation from the author HERE. And the dramatic official book trailer HERE.
