Hanna's Jewish family lives in Ukraine. Their neighbors don't seem to be bothered by the fact that they are Jewish. In fact, Hanna works for a neighbor lady helping her create elaborate Easter Eggs for the coming holiday. When Hitler's Army invades, Hanna's family flees to the forest. Her father and Uncle are expert hunters and know the forest well. Eventually the family retreats even further into a cave deep in the forest. Two related, large families totaling 36 people remain underground for nearly three years. It is the only known case of entire families surviving the Holocaust. Yes, this is a true story. Just when I think I have read every possible Holocaust memoir, another, more incredible one pops up!
My Name is Hanna obviously focuses on young Hanna. Her bravery is central to the story and to the survival of her Father and thus the whole family.
Also of interest: The Secret of the Priest's Grotto is a non-fiction account of the archeological excavation of the cave.
AND..... watch a ABC News story about the family HERE.
