By Adaobi Tricia Nwaubani
Translated by Viviana Mazza
This book is based on the real life kidnapping of 276 girls in Nigeria by the militant group Boko Haram. The author has chosen fiction as a way to tell a story in which we really don't know everything that happened. The main character is unnamed, but we know that she is sweet, bright and about to go away for advanced schooling. Instead, she is taken in the night with most of the girls of her village. They are subjected to constant brainwashing and once they have been "converted", are married off to the soldiers. Then they have to cook and care for the entire camp. And be wives to these awful men.
The best friend of the main character truly has been brainwashed. She is in "love" and so proud of her new husband's fight against the government.
The last 20 or pages of this book is the story behind the story: the interviews that took place, the news sources and reports that are available to see. This really happened. Such a compelling story.
