Please browse here to find books that I think are worth your time.... or are real stinkers. I will let you know what I REALLY think of what I am reading. You might not find the newest and most popular books here, but I would LOVE it if you find something unexpectedly great!

I will indicate on each post the Lexile level of the book.

We Were the Lucky Ones

By Georgia Hunter
Lexile - ?

I know, I know. Another Holocaust title. Sorry/Not sorry. I heard an interview with this author and was compelled to read the TRUE story of her family during the Holocaust. It is listed as fiction because the author invented conversations and filled in details that are lost to time. But this really happened.

Here is what makes this story unique: the characters are adult siblings that scatter across the globe as they either avoid or are caught up in the Holocaust. That is a twist I had been unfamiliar with. One brother attempts to excape to Brazil. One family is sent to Siberia, but is freed if they promise to fight for the Russians. Meanwhile, the parents are "home" in Poland suffering the invasion and destruction of their culture and neighbors.

Yes, this family really was "lucky" in the face of evil. Georgia Hunter didn't even know that her family were Holocaust survivors! Listen to an interview with her HERE. (8 mins)
