By Rhys Bowen
Lexile = ?
So I read The Tuscan Child by Rhys Bowen after hearing about the title from readers I trust, but I thought that it was too "old" for the school. (sidenote: that's a great way to find books for you.... get to know readers you trust) Then I saw In Farleigh Field available, and I LOVE a good WWII novel! (another sidenote: if you like one book by an author, you will probably like another!)
Farleigh is one of those ancient British homes in the English countryside. World War II has come to Britain, and then it arrives at Farleigh when a body is found. It looks like an airman has attempted a parachute jump and failed miserably. I was surprised by the mysterious turn the novel took at this point. Bowen is able to show how the war swirls around her characters. Although war is the great big happening in their lives, they still have family issues, fall in love, and have to just live their normal lives as well. I also liked the perspective of women and important role they played, at home, in winning the war.
