Please browse here to find books that I think are worth your time.... or are real stinkers. I will let you know what I REALLY think of what I am reading. You might not find the newest and most popular books here, but I would LOVE it if you find something unexpectedly great!

I will indicate on each post the Lexile level of the book.

Blindess

By Jose Saramago
Lexile = 10,000,000

Ok, just kidding about the reading level on this one. But it is super hard for a couple of reasons. It is translated from Portuguese which means it doesn't "flow" well in English and it also comes with different conventions of writing. No paragraphs! No separation of speakers with quotations or indentation. Paragraphs go on for pages and pages. Sentences last entire pages as well.

Here is the thing: I hated it. I kept trying and trying to like it, but I hated it. It won the NOBEL PRIZE for literature. And I'm not even keeping it in the library. Here is what one reader posted on Goodreads:
This book was brutal in the most literal sense of the term. It looks at how humans can devolve into savages when put in certain situations, in this case when a 'white blindness' epidemic breaks out and causes people to suddenly lose their sight for no explicable reason.

And.... it was made into a movie!!!! Rated R....

I'll be donating this library copy to the Mendon Library. If you really want to attempt the read, it's available there! Not for me.....
